Greece was such a sigh of relief after Egypt. We flew in to Athens Mar.3. Our first couple days was just traveling: train, other train, bus, ferry boat. Our destination was Corfu. We arrived in Corfu and met Madalena and Spiro. I told her we were looking for jobs, and right away she said she was looking for volunteers. So Sumi and I decided to work for accommodation while we looked for jobs….little did we know…The hostel, Sunrock, is located on Pelekas beach. It’s probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. It’s on the beach with mountains behind and a gorgeous sunset. This is where we spent our first month in Greece. Adventures were had. The Greek tourist industry faces a grim summer, with bookings down by 25 to 30 per cent as recessions deepen in Germany and the UK, Greece’s main tourist markets.

Dozens of four-star and five-star hotels in Crete, Rhodes and Corfu, the most popular islands, decided against opening for Easter, the traditional start of the season, in an attempt to keep down costs.

“Many hotels will stay closed in April and May and hope to break even over the peak months,” said Nikos Angelopoulos, president of SETE, an industry group.

Hoteliers also face constraints because banks are cutting lending to the tourist industry, in spite of a €28bn ($37bn, £25bn) government support package aimed at sustaining small and medium-sized businesses, said Mr Angelopoulos.

The €35bn tourism industry is Greece’s biggest employer, but more than 50,000 jobs could be at risk if hotels shut down during the “shoulder” seasons in spring and autumn

On Saturday, April 11 thousands of Greeks will be boycotting coffee houses and cafes as a protest against the high prices charged for coffee. Coffee prices in Greece are amongst the highest - if not the highest - in Europe.

Black filter coffee usually starts from €2.50, cappuccino and frappe from €3.50 and types of coffee like the fredochino and mochacino cost as much as €6.50. These are prices in normal cafeterias - and don’t forget, Greek salaries are amongst the lowest in Europe. Each year Greeks drink 5.8 billion cups of coffee, which cost them €1.8 billion.
